Update and Pictures Galore!

Hi Families,

It has been an extremely busy few weeks here in Portable 1.  Here’s a little snippet of what we have been up to:

Math

  • Practicing our 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s multiplication and division facts.  I have really been stressing to the kids that if a student knows a multiplication fact, they will be able to quickly find the related division equation!
  • Noticing patterns in the multiplication chart.
  • Lots of talk about fact families.
  • Spiral review of addition and subtraction within 1,000.
  • Began using Moby Max.

Cursive:

  • We have practiced letters c, a, d, g, h, t, p, and e.

Reading:

  • Retelling our stories
  • Summarizing what we have read so far
  • Giving ourselves comprehension checks
  • Making predictions, not guesses, about what will will happen next in our stories

Writing:

  • Working on developing personal narratives:  Writing with a storyteller’s voice.
  • Partner writing.
  • Sharing our work as authors during Author’s Chair on Friday.

Science:

  • Sound is a form of energy created by vibrations.
  • Experiments and group work with tuning forks, nails, aluminum foil, string and rulers in order to investigate how sound travels.
  • Scientific vocabulary and definitions.
  • How to record our scientific observations properly.

Social Studies:

  • Scholastic Weekly News
  • Scholastic Science Spin

Special Events:

  • Cheetah Cheers Assembly:  We won the Golden Trash Can Award for cleanest room in September!
  • A free Dictionary for each student from the Valley Grange!
  • Art Docent with Mrs. Sarah Harper.
  • Walk-A-Thon:  A wonderful time!  Sunny weather and happy kids and staff walking and running.
  • Gem Party!  We watched The Secret Life of Pets as a reward for filling our gem jar!

This week…

Hi families!

Here is some information of the work we have been doing in class:

MATH:

  • Working on our understanding of what multiplication is (repeated addition, groups of “things”, drawn representation, skip counting and array models), using specific math vocabulary (ex: factors, products, equations, arrays) and setting class expectations in order to begin our math rotations (2 rotations/day, rotating every other day between “Meet the teacher,” “Technology,” “Fact Practice,” and “Independent Work.”)  I am very excited to begin rotations, as it will allow me to spend more individualized time with small groups once the whole group mini-lesson is finished!  The kids are excited because they get more tech time and hands-on math.
  • This week and next, our focus begins to shift to multiplication fluency, as well as the foundations of division.

READING:

  • We have been focusing on building our reading lives- what makes reading great for us, and how we can make sure we are doing all we can to make reading fun and successful.  Some ideas we have discussed are choosing great books that are “just right,” choosing comfortable reading spots, how to review books to create positive buzz, and reading books like gold!
  • We made it to our second mini goal of 20 minutes of just-right reading with NO interruptions or distractions!  Woo hoo!

WRITING:

  • Today is our first “official” writing lesson- how writers think of ideas for personal narratives.
  • We finished our “All About Me” poems and the kids learned how to save and type them in Microsoft Word.  Pictures to come!
  • Lots of partner writing, in preparation for our first Author’s Chair on Friday.

CURSIVE:

  • Lowercase letters “c,” “a” and “d.”

SOCIAL STUDIES:

  • Scholastic Weekly and Science Spin.
  • Our study of Pacific Coast Native Americans will begin next week.

SCIENCE:

  • We will be beginning our science unit on sound this Friday!

OTHER HAPPENINGS:

  • Last week, we finished up our first round of computerized MAP testing for reading, and tomorrow we will complete our MAP math assessment in the computer lab.
  • As a class, we have earned almost 2/3 of the gems needed for a class party!  These gems come from excellent choices, such as walking with a level zero voice, 3-point days at specialist, working together and having a tidy classroom.
  • Homework is due on Friday!  Students can turn it in at any time before then, as well.
  • First Cheetah Cheers assembly is on 9/29 at 10:15 in the gym.  Families are always welcome to attend!

Pictures!

A great beginning!

Hi families,

We have had a great time getting to know each other, reading wonderful books, creating art and so much more!  Here are some pictures of the work we have been doing:

9/11

In remembrance of the September 11th tragedy, we watched a fantastic episode of Reading Rainbow, called The Tin Forest, which focused on the hope and cooperation during the aftermath.  We then talked about what a first responder is and what they do.  We gathered a list of words, and then the kids set to work creating thank you notes for our local Duvall Police Department and Fire Department (I will be delivering these along with some fresh-baked cookies to our fire and police as soon as the last few are finished!).  Here are a few of the notes:

We also created our Writing Journal collages!  We gathered pictures that were important to us, in hopes that they will inspire us to be creative and thoughtful writers.  They turned out beautifully!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year!

Welcome to the new school year!

Don’t forget to come check out your new classroom at Taking Care of Business on Wednesday, August 30th from 4-6 PM .  The PTA will also have some great booths and information for you in the gym, so be sure to start there and make your way over to Portable 1 (next to Cheetah Club) to say hi!

Hour of Code

Check this out!

This week and next, your students will be taking part in “Hour of Code,” an exciting movement that teaches ALL students that they can be computer scientists and code experts.  It’s free, and there are TONS of appealing games that show students the very basics of computer coding and commands. The ability levels of each game range from pre-readers (little brothers and sisters can join in!) all the way up to 12th grade, and feature engaging themes from popular movies and games, such as Minecraft, Moana, Frozen and Angry Birds.

Visit  https://code.org/learn to see the fun games available!  This is an awesome way to build our kids’ confidence in the computer sciences (especially our young ladies)!

A Harvest Day STEM Challenge!

Our special activity on Halloween was the Candy Corn Tower Challenge!  Students paired up and developed a plan to try and create the tallest free-standing structure out of candy corns, 100 toothpicks and marshmallows.  They had to rely on trial and error, experimentation and previous knowledge of what makes a structure stable.  Turns out, a cube or a triangle is the most stable base–our tallest structure was over 22 centimeters high!

A special thank you to everyone who sent in treats for our Harvest Party!
